Basic Computer Classes
Whether you're just starting with computers (in which case someone helped you find what you're reading now), or you're trying to fill in the gaps in your knowledge, these are for you.

Windows… START-ing
START HERE!  Begin working with a computer, use the mouse, search for Help… and find out what the heck “Windows” are! For absolute beginners, or those who have been stumbling along until now.

Internet... for the novice
Use the Internet to find information about nutrition, exercise, medication, etc.  Correspond with others who have your interests and needs.  For beginners, who have just started using the computer a bit.

E-Mail... beginning
An easy-going introduction to E-Mail and how it can bring you in closer touch with the people most important to you. For those who can use the computer a bit.

Beginning Clay
For students who've never had formal clay instruction. Learn the basics - Pinch pots, Coil forms, slab forms as well as how to center the clay on the wheel and make forms such as mugs and bowls. Learn though projects, exploring each of the basic forming techniques.

Beginning Wheel
For students who've never used the potter’s wheel and students still developing their basic throwing skills. Learning the basics - how to center the clay on the wheel and make forms such as mugs, bowls, and vases - students also learn how to trim their work, add embellishments (such as handles and feet), along with decoration and glazing techniques.

Dance – Social Dance Workshop

An ongoing series of fun-filled instruction for dancers with a range of experience, from beginners to experienced dancers. Each session is a five week series and participants can begin with any session. Specific dance steps for a given session are flexible and group input is always welcome. Takes you where you are as a dancer and works with you to increase the ease, enjoyment and diversity in your dance life. Possibilities for social dancing include shag, swing, mambo, samba, salsa, foxtrot, cha-cha, waltz, etc.

INSTRUCTOR: Richard Cousins, member of U.S.A. Dance, specializes in beginners and likes to “keep it fun and social.” He’s been teaching American style social ballroom dance for 40 years has also performed ballet and in musical theatre.

eBay - Basic Selling
Learn step by step instruction to prepare you to become a successful seller on the Internet auction site, Ebay.  You will learn everything from setting up a user name, registering a PayPal account, taking good photographs, and listing an item to sell as well as numerous marketing techniques.  Assumes basic computer skills.

Intermediate Wheel
For students who've completed beginning wheel class and want to improve their throwing skills. Offers students the opportunity to create more complex forms such as lidded vessels, teapots, and altered forms. Also learn dynamic glaze and surface solutions. Students should bring a notebook to class. Assumes basic clay skills and throwing cylinders.

Oil Painting Fundamentals, Contemporary Impressionism
Learn the fundamentals of oil painting in a contemporary impressionistic style.   Heavy emphasis on the building blocks of composition, color and application.  Students will paint still life and landscapes and will work from life as well as photos.

Photoshop... Beginnings
Improve snapshots, make good pictures better, restore old photos using this program to turn them into something you’ll be proud of and your family will treasure.  You needn’t be a photographer or have a digital camera.  Great fun!  Assumes basic computer skills – keyboard and mouse, starting programs, saving files, etc.

INSTRUCTOR: John Bambach has taught and worked with photography since 1969 and was a founding member of the Light Factory. His career in education and multimedia technology spans 40 years, in both higher education and public television.  He is coordinator of the Cornwell Learning Center.

Photoshop – Second Steps

If you’re already cropping, adjusting image quality and removing red-eye, you’re ready for this.  Increased creativity and image control with the most powerful feature of Photoshop… LAYERS!  Also, refine your selection techniques for greater ease and precision.  Great fun!   Assumes basic Photoshop knowledge and general computer skills.

Photo Restoration 
with Photoshop
Old family photo treasures are disappearing with time. Most are damaged by poor storage, handling, and general wear and tear. Learn to use Photoshop to salvage and restore these priceless relics of family history!    Assumes basic Photoshop knowledge and general computer skills.

Photoshop Workshop

This workshop-format course will take you and your project to whatever your next level would be. Whether it’s a restoration of an old family photo (using cloning and layers), fixing a bad expression in a group photo (replacing that face with another of the same person taken at the same time), or trying to improve distinct areas within a landscape (as did Ansel Adams in his printing), bring it on! Your project is our content. Assumes basic familiarity with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Special Interest Group
s
Special Interest Groups in the Cornwell Learning Center are a response to interests and the desire of individuals to share work, ideas, and energy.  They’re a kind of informal “club” in which the only membership qualifications are your interest and participation.

Regular meetings give us a monthly forum for learning and creative interaction.  It provides a year-round activity that builds creative community.

Audio and Video Interest Group
Digital media has transformed audio and video production to make it easy and accessible. Any modern computer is a production facility. Designed as a support group for the audio and video volunteers who produce weekly video webcasts for our church, it's open to others interested in learning various aspects of audio and video recording and editing.

LEADER: John Bambach has taught and performed audio production since 1969 and video since 1971, in both higher education and public television.  He is coordinator of the Cornwell Learning Center.
           Second Wednesdays of most months, 7—8:30pm

Genealogy – Internet Genealogy Interest Group
Where did you come from? Who was your grandmomma’s momma? Are you anxious to trace your family tree but intimidated by the 250,000 websites on Genealogy? We can explore some good ways to get started, emphasizing the free stuff – it's fun!

LEADER: Ted Lucas is a retired pediatrician who has been interested in tracing family trees for several decades. He is a former president of the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society and loves to help folks get started finding out about their own families.

Photography Interest Group
Open to anyone, and intended for the widest range of interest, no matter the equipment or experience. We learn by sharing our work through monthly assignments and meetings, including programs emphasizing the universal elements of photography (composition, light, etc.). After-Lunch SHORT SUBJECTS

Each is a one time, one hour lesson on a single subject that will make ALL your computer operations go more easily. Each offered once a month. Keep your Wednesdays (after lunch) open for these.

CUT & PASTE – Moving info among documents
BIG time-saver!  Learn how to easily cut or copy things you need and paste them where you want.  Whether it's a section of an Excel Spreadsheet, a photo from the Internet, or a paragraph from a recent Email, you can move it where you need it.

HOT TIPS – Windows shortcuts for being more productive
A collection of GREAT tips!  Learn fast and easy ways to select text for editing.  Use shortcut keystrokes for many common tasks (for example, UNDO = Control + Z).  Find easy ways for inserting pictures.  See easier ways to start working an existing document.  Save your fonts with your document, etc.

ORGANIZING FILES – how not to lose your stuff
You need this! Learn how to organize your “My Documents” files by creating file folders, renaming files, moving files into folders, copying files for placement in several folders and deleting unneeded files.

The Power and Pleasure of Poetry
We will explore both our own poems and those of others, discussing word use, rhythm, line breaks, story, emotion and music in poetry. Looking for the narrative and the lyrical aspects of poems, we will help each other discover the new in poems we have already written and new poems waiting to be written.

Small Product Photography for 2D and 3D Artists

Demonstrates basic approaches to the digital photography of paintings, pottery and jewelry, emphasizing the use of common cameras and commonly available settings and lighting.  Intended for visual artists wishing to present their work in print and online.
