Youth Choir

The Youth Choir is a place for adolescent youth to learn about their newly changed voices and how to use them properly. Music is chosen with specific vocal ranges to allow young men and women to sing regularly and successfully all through the various stages of vocal change. The choir sings in the 11:00 a.m. worship services as scheduled. The choir explores a wide variety of music including: classical choral literature, folk-hymns, spirituals, gospel songs, and international ethnic music. Emphasis on creating a musical community is a major priority for this choir. The choir has performed fully staged productions such as GodSpell, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Cotton Patch Gospel. The Youth Choir traditionally begins each season with a retreat and culminates each season with a spring program.

Youth Musical: Cotton Patch Gospel

This year’s culminating spring musical was a performance of Cotton Patch Gospel at the end of May 2008, in Heaton Hall.

The Cotton Patch Gospel was written by Clarence Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farm (which planted the seeds for the global work of Habitat for Humanity International) with a bluegrass flavored musical score by Harry Chapin. This musical adaptation used our choir as singers, dancers, and actors to present a modern day version of the life of Jesus. The setting is Gainesville, GA (Bethlehem) and Atlanta, GA (Jerusalem).

The performance was directed by John Templin, actor and drama teacher from Arizona. John met Dr. Shoemaker while living in Dallas, when Dr. Shoemaker was pastoring a church in the area. Templin has presented this play as a solo act several times. Connie Rhyne-Bray and Tia Williams of our congregation also brought their skills of musical theatre and choreography to the production team. The performances were free, with donations going to the Youth Choir Scholarship Fund.

Check out the photos below for highlights of this successful performance.
