Youth Education

The Myers Park Baptist Youth Department seeks to be a Christian community where everyone feels accepted, supported, challenged and affirmed. We want each person to have fun, feel safe, and be free to be him/herself. As part of this mission, we provide a call toward responsibility, maturity and Christian discipleship. In all our activities, we foster spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social growth. We strive to be flexible and loving in everything we do. Relationships are the primary goal of the youth department, understanding that God wants to meet each of us in our daily relationships and activities.

In our educational activities we hope to provide an atmosphere in which youth can ask honest questions about faith and life issues and make discoveries on their own. We encourage open discussion and questions, even disagreement. We mirror our church covenant in that we are "open to all new light," and we "accept controversy as a reality of life together and an opportunity for growth toward maturity."

Youth Sunday School
From September through May, we provide Sunday school for Middle School (6th-8th graders) and Senior High (9th-12th graders).

We are using Kingdom Quest,  a unique Sunday School workshop rotation model for youth in grades 6 through 10 that has been created with the faith journey as its central theme. It offers Sunday School programming for youth that will enable them to create memorable experiences and to grow in their relationships, knowledge, and faith. Kingdom Quest attempts to address emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual needs as youth study the Bible together and answer God's call to minister to each other and to those in our community and beyond.

The youth participate in 6-week rotations that studies a specific story or scripture passage for four Sundays, looking at the scripture from a different perspective each Sunday. Youth participate in a variety of activities in the workshops, including cooking, crafts, drama, and games. Then on the fifth Sunday, a mission component allows middle school students and high school students to work independently or together on a related hands-on mission project (on- or off-campus). The sixth Sunday allows for reflection time, incorporating and processing the learning in each individual class and then together with the entire Youth Department.

The focus is on process rather than product, and we hope the results will be young people who are engaged in and enthusiastic about their own faith journeys for a lifetime.

Purpose and Vision
In Sunday School, we strive to help students explore issues of faith and life. A fun-loving environment encourages inclusiveness and an open-minded atmosphere. We hope to help students mature in Christian discipleship by inviting them to ask difficult questions and make their own choices as they take ownership of their personal faith in Christ.

Sunday Schedule
9:30-10:45 Kingdom Quest Sunday School
11:00 Morning Worship
5:00 Youth Choir Rehearsal
6:15 Youth Fellowship Supper
6:45-8:00 Youth Fellowship

Sunday Night Fellowship
Fellowship is a time for our young people to join together for fun, laughter, learning and community service. Sunday evening Fellowships meet in the Youth Hall from September through May. Fellowships include creative games, outreach, guest speakers, and fun outings. The Youth Minister and members of the Fellowship Planning Team help plan the fellowships.

Wednesday Evenings
Dinner will be served in Heaton Hall from 5:45-6:30 p.m. After dinner, youth will migrate to the Youth Hall where a youth “Study Hall” will take place. Youth are invited to help each other with homework and projects and to join in community time. Some weeks we'll join the scheduled programs with the rest of the church. All Wednesday night programs end at 7:30.

Youth Missions
The Youth Department provides a variety of mission opportunities for our youth, both within the Myers Park Baptist Church community (such as ushering, working on the grounds, or babysitting) and within the larger community (Urban Ministries Center, Room In The Inn, Crop Walk, the Lakewood Community and Southminster). Youth are encouraged to attend either the Middle School or the High School Summer Mission Trip.

Fundraising
We couldn't do all the things we do without adequate funds. In order to make all these things possible, we offer a variety of fundraisers to help offset the cost for youth programs. This year we plan to fundraise through the Youth Christmas Tree Sale (December) and occasional congregational lunches.

Nov. 30 - Dec. 2: Visit our tree lot at the Youth Christmas Tree Sale. Let our energetic youth take some of the chaos out of your Christmas. Contact Becky McGrath at 704-560-1124 for more information. Order ahead by downloading and filling out this form: Tree Sale »

Retreats and Summer Programs
Youth retreats provide opportunities for community building, fellowship, and worship that go beyond our regular weekly meetings.
